Day Three: Trick or Treat Hunting

for the past few weeks i have been dying to bake some good old halloween candy and treats, i wanted to make cupcakes, and cookies, and those pretzel sticks dipped in chocolate, and then smeared with yellow and orange sprinkles.  ummmm i love candy, although i am on a “diet” so i am trying not to eat that kind of stuff!!!!  well today i finally decided that i would make some treats and take them into my office, all the girls bake, and bring goodies all the time so i felt as though it was my turn to show off my betty krocker baking skills!

So the first thing i needed to do was decide on a fun treat to make, i love cupcakes, so i went with that.  i chose these adorable cupcakes with grave stones made out of cookies, and PEEPS ghost, then i added some crumbles oreos on top of the frosing, and one of those candy corn pumpkins! as soon as i saw them i knew that that was the treat for me!

the next thing that i needed to do was go and get the supplies for the job, sounds easy enough… well i was wrong, i ended up going to wal mart cause i though “hey i can get everything at once, and pay half the cost”!  BOY WAS I WRONG!!! it took me two hours and twenty laps up and down isle after isle only to find that they didn’t have orange frosting, or the halloween fun fetty cupcake batter that i wanted, not to mention the right cookies for the grave stone, and the black icing to write “R.I.P.” on the grave stone!  i left there feeling tired and out of the holiday spirit.  but once returning home i put on a happy face, and jumped right into the kitchen.

baking the cakes went off without any flaws, but then again i have made about a million cupcakes in my lifetime so its really no surprise.  i have even come up with my own techniques on how to get the right amount of batter into each individual cup.  i use a 1/4 of a cup and a knife to steady the stream, now i am sure that there are alot of people who use this technique, but just let me have my moment.

next duty on the list was to frost them, which would have also been a sinch except stupid wal mart didn’t have my orange frosting, so i had to food coloring to make my white frosting look orange, which is somehow harder than you would think!

next i crumbled the oreos, which i had to peal apart and only use the side without the frosting, not to bad, but just took sometime.  i must also add that i crumbled about 15 times to much.

next i decorated them, which is my favorite part cause i get to work my creative magic!!!  first i frosted them, and added the oreo crumbles, then i put a pumpkin on top, and one of those plastic spider ring.  next i stabbed a malono cookie into half of them and in the other half i put a PEEPS ghost on top.  everything was going fine until i realized that i didn’t have any black icing to write the R.I.P. on the cookies.  i was pissed, so i ran back to the store, where they charged me $2.00 for a tube that barely weighed as much as i dime.  so i came home and wrote on the cookies and thought that i had finished my little “fun” project (4 hours after starting).

but no the “fun” wasn’t over yet, my little ghost decided that they were tired and that they didn’t want to stand up, one, by one they all fell over, so i had to go back and reenforce then with more frosting (thank god i had a lot).

so i guess at the end of the day i was pretty happy with my end result, but the next time i decide to do a fun, easy project i will make sure i have everything, not buy from wal mart, and be in a better holiday mood!
